HOW TO LOVE WHAT YOU HATE TO DO --
THE REALITY : You will never stick to a diet filled with food you loathe; the same goes for walking into the gym with a negative attitude, loathe to get sweaty and uncomfortable. As a writer, i've found it's easier to sit down every day and pound out a page, paragraph or few words when I shed the pressure of selling my work or impressing an audience and just doing it for the love. Having a 'passion' or a 'labor of love' is extremely healthy and that includes your health and fitness.
Unless you embrace the journey you will never realize the consistency that is KEY to your success.
TRUTH #1 : The first 2 weeks will be the hardest obstacle you will face when it comes to working out, but for those of you willing to take the plunge take heart -- If you can survive the initial shock of your body being jolted back into shape then turning this into a positive habit will be so much easier. Turn your dread instead into motivation for the body you really want.
TRUTH #2 : There is ABSOLUTELY no substitute for hitting the gym & mindful eating habits.
Unless you embark on the journey, you will never arrive at your desired destination.

TRAINING : THE WRITE STUFF Pt. 5
A useful technique i learned years ago and wish I had earlier is taking pain and externalizing it: making it into something tangible and real! Think of 'pain' as a 'voice'. When lifting weights, the voice starts bitching at me immediately - IGNORE IT! After just a few reps, the voice is now yelling -- What the Hell are you Doing? STOP! Again, just IGNORE THE VOICE. The end is where the voice can no longer be ignored, SCREAMING in your head and muscles -- DAMN YOU, STOP NOW! By going beyond your pain for even one more rep is where the real change will happen!
Now that the pain 'voice' has been silenced, you can turn your attention to the positive aspects of the workout. So, how to use this practically in the gym? simple: VISUALIZE your muscles growing & working, getting bigger and stronger, imagine you with the perfect muscle! Make every rep count, make every set better than the last . . . don't shut your mind off & zone out; on the contrary! If you don't learn how to stay in the moment, or in the scene if you are a writer, then you will never realize the body you always wanted. GOOD LUCK!

TRAINING : THE WRITE STUFF Pt. 4
There is a useful technique that's been employed by psychotherapist for years and has been utilized by writers of all styles to assist in getting past writers block and insecurities. First, identify these inner voices -- that shouldn't be hard! Self-doubt, fear, self pity or hate, old and untrue ideas you haven't let go of yet, laziness, denial -- these are just a few.
Next, externalize these voices: instead of 'I am never going to get in shape' instead say: 'SELF DOUBT is trying to tell me i'm never going to lose weight'. By identifying each voice for what it is and turning it into an external, tangible entity, you can better challenge it and banish it from your mind. Now it's time to replace it with a positive voice: ‘I feel so much better about myself after working out hard and eating healthy’…’I know i will succeed the harder i push myself' and so on...the important thing is this: out with the negative, in with the positive. There IS ACTUALLY SOMETHING in the human psyche that successfully utilizes this method to purge unhelpful influences. Don't believe me? google ‘Narrative Therapy' sometime!

Nobody is immune to those negative inner voices trying to keep you from tasting success. Since i began writing, i can't tell you how many times i've dealt withs rejection, or how many times i find myself comparing my skills to those who have had publishing success.
The same goes for those of you on the road to fitness...those voices that tell you to not waste you spare time going to the gym...whispering in your ear that you'll never lose that beer gut...or constantly providing convenient little excuses to just 'take a day off from the gym...' or, for most people, these voices are the loudest when deciding what to eat. In my spin/cardio classes, i notice people holding back on their total effort or quitting 2 minutes before they should -- there's those pesky voices again! Internalizing and rationalizing all the reasons why you think you shouldn't be pushing yourself a little bit harder. In other words: finishing what you started! Consistency + Intensity = Results!
Consider the theory of mind over matter: willpower is a VERY STRONG deterrent to help fight those unhelpful inner voices or negative ideas that mess up your motivation to get fit!

BABY STEPS:
As a writer, it's easy to get caught up in the big picture: looking ahead to the 'final product'. but before the finished product can be realized, the first chapter must be written. The same goes for working out: It's easy to become daunted by how much total weight you must lose to be 'happy', or how many crunches you have to do before seeing that hard fought six pack. Setting small goals in a smaller amount of time will help you to divide and conquer.
E.L. Doctorow wrote: Setting small goals is like 'driving in the fog at night...you can only see as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.'
If i am trying to gain muscle mass or lose fat, I will set a month-long goal and try to reach it. If I want to gain, I tweak many things: my diet -- eati slow burning carbs, avoiding sugar, and increase my protein intake - try for one gram of protein for each pound of body weight. The best protein is REAL food like chicken, steak, eggs, oatmeal, pasta, etc.. Next, change the workout— more weight, low reps, blast one body part. To lean down? Same diet rules apply, but in the gym use HIIT and cardio to realize those abs!

Sometimes it's hard to focus on getting in shape/staying fit when you have so many other things going on in your world. I am a writer by trade & learned massage while working as a gym trainer for a few years, & like most of you, I too have many things going on outside the gym. After college, I moved to NYC and worked for HBO before being hired to write for a progressive web magazine, where i worked for two blissful years (think: Carey Bradshaw in *** in the City). Unfortunately, after 9/11, the magazine closed, the literary industry grew stagnate for many years, and -- as often happens in life -- i was left to find alternative work. Fitness was and is a big passion in life and I trained at an upscale gym to make ends meet.
Through my experience in both writing and doing PT, I have learned many valuable action principles which I think can be helpful when applied to your time in and out of the gym. They have worked wonders for me, and I hope they help you too.

HEALTHY STEPS TO DINING OUT Pt. 3
Speaking of serving, ask yours! Well trained waiters jobs are to up sell/upgrade your menu choices; they are also trained and (hopefully) tipped well to answer any questions you may have about a particular item on their menu. TIPS = To Insure Proper Service. Many nicer, trendy or upscale, chef-featured restaurants take pride in making vegetarian, hard-core vegan, or generally healthier dishes for their clientele that tastes just as good, minus the trans-fatty or sugar-filled carbohydrate packed dishes being inhaled by your peers, friends or even boss. ask your server if they recommend anything that is lower fat and not cooked in butter or oil. again: don’t feel bad or guilty or high maintenance as its their JOB to know the answers to your inquiries and modifications that are available for the evolved, resilient and educated diner (YOU) … so ASK THEM! Just because you ordered something healthy doesn't mean you can order dessert as your reward for being such an in-control dining genius. This is an EVERY DAY, EVERY MEAL endeavor my friends, and there’s no award ceremony or medal presentation to follow just because you exerted a bit of will-power over the Olive Garden!

HEALTHY STEPS TO DINING OUT pt. 2
i know, compared to a mundane home cooked meal, its easy to get caught up in the restaurant experience, especially if it is upscale, trendy, or boasts some fusion styled menu -- add in the waiters serving you hand and foot and the smiling, kinda cute hostess leading you to the proverbial trough, and before you know it, you're staring, mouth watering, at the DAYS SPECIALS on the menu and thinking 'damn, that sounds good...how could i ever pass that up?' STOP. and look into the light, literally, as in, the lighter items on the menu. but don't be afraid of words like 'light' or ‘healthy fare’, because even though the name is literally a repellant for legions of struggling diners fighting the fight every lunch/dinner doesn't have to auto equal a bowl of sliced celery and some cubed tofu with basil and three drops of olive oil.
TRY THIS: having a dinner-sized salad with grilled fish or chicken (even grilled steak is acceptable) is JUST as filling and satisfying as that pasta dish you seem to be eyeing. think about all the butter, oil, MSG, gluten, salt and God knows what else is going to be sacrificed to make that 1600 calorie special-of-the-day you are considering.

HOW TO BE A HEALTHY DINER pt. 1
I will admit that i am a huge fan of dining out. hell, i'm a big fan of dining, period. and i know when i say this i’m not alone. a majority of my training clients are extremely active in their careers and are regularly taking trips out of town. if you are among the many who regularly eat their meals outside their own kitchen, i am here to tell you that the days of using this as an excuse to eat poorly are officially over. there be no more free license to order straight from the ‘house specials’ and/or to visit the dessert section of the menu post carb-fest, fat-filled main course. in fact, after reading this, you shouldn’t have much trouble making SMART, RATIONAL, FULLY REALISTIC, and ultimately fulfilling CHOICES every single solitary time you find yourself leaving a tip or fighting with co-workers over who covers the tab (..itemized on next month’s expense report, no doubt).
follow these altogether straight-forward, easy steps and you will have reached a major milestone in your fight to get fit — a fight you are bound to win by making these seemingly minuscule everyday decisions:

SOME RULES OF ETIQUETTE DURING YOUR MASSAGE
when it comes to being a masseur, we are all invariably bombarded with the same client questions we try to articulate in our RENTMASSEUR PROFILES. .
in nearly every profile where the masseur is a professional and not just a hustler offering a cheesy rubdown, you can find out all the pertinent information about the massage.
LOCATION: try to get beyond just the pictures -- just BELOW the pictures is a MAP ME, which will literally show you the exact location of where your potential masseur lives. it takes one second, but to text back and forth, it merely takes away from the time you have to get to the guy and receive his amazing massage!
RATES: the rates i list are for THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE only... but i specifically outline that all you have to do is inquire about my other styles of massage (there are three: therapeutic, sensual, and erotic. i pair the sensual and erotic together, since in my mind, EVERY massage, therapeutic or erotic, is certainly SENSUAL on some level.
MASSAGE INFO: this one takes up the most time, which is why it is important to read the profile all the way through -- MOST are VERY SHORT! it takes 2 minutes max to do a total overview.

HOT TEA GOOD for Zzz?
Sure, black tea is a better late-in-the-day choice than black coffee. And you can cut the sugar content in half by adding honey instead. But, chances are, you'll still be tossing and turning in bed an hour or three later. That's because black teas have between 40 to 120 milligrams of caffeine—over half a cup of coffee.
The better choice? Rooibos Tea -- this awesome red tea has no caffeine and is naturally sweet—forget adding sugar. Plus, it contains antioxidants that are proven to lower blood pressure and boost your immune system.
TRY THIS: Celestial Seasonings Red Tea.
No food comes to the rescue faster than cereal when you need a quick midnight snack. But if you plan on falling asleep, do yourself a favor and avoid the hyper-sweetened kid stuff, which has nearly as much sugar as a Hershey's jumbo chocolate bar and zero fiber which prevents it from hijacking your blood sugar.
All said, a little dose of carbohydrates chosen wisely can actually improve your sleep, but the best cereal is one that contains as much fiber as it does sugar. Cereals that are made primarily with whole grain corn have the most fiber. Add berries for more sweet!
