MagicManos's Personal Masseur Interview
Last Updated: Aug 14, 2016

1
How do you like clients to feel about the experience when they leave?

- I like clients to feel like they truly experienced healing, like for the 60-90min we worked together helped them further along in their journey towards health and wellness.

2
Is extensive training necessary for a Masseur in order to be successful?

- Extensive training is fabulous, but not everyone's reality. I have worked with trained people who do a terrible job at giving massage and others with no reasoning who had me purring like a kitten. I feel it's more important to be able to connect well with your clients.

3
What advice would you give to someone who wants to be a Masseur?

- Know who you are and what your skills are. Don't promise a DEEP tissue experience if you're more skillful with effleurage. And be clear as to what you're about. This creates a space of comfort and trust between the masseur and client. You, as the healer, are responsible for holding the space and containing the energy: that's a true responsibility.

4
Why did you become a Masseur?

- I was working as a registered nurse in the Emergency Dept and was giving a coworker a little back rub when she said to me, "You should really do this...I would pay you to work on me." I laughed and said, "thanks," to which she turned around in her chair, pausing her massage, looked me dead in the eye and said, "really, you've got a gift. People would pay you for this, I sure would." That planted a seed that took root some 4 years later.

5
What are your hobbies, what do you like to do in your spare time?

- Traveling all over the world is one of my favorite things to do. As often as I can I like to travel to new places and visit familiar ones as well. I love theme parks, physical fitness, any sort of outdoorsy, athletic activity, great food, baking, the theater...

6
Some people say that being a Masseur is addictive. Would you miss your Masseur days ?

- I love working with people and holding space for healing. As long as my work entails this, I think I will be happy. That said, bodywork is a truly unique form of healing that is very near and dear to my heart. I would miss it at times, I'm sure.

7
How long have you been a Masseur and how long do think you'd like to continue?

- I've been doing bodywork since 2010 and think I would like to continue for many years to come. As I have mentioned, I am a healer, and while my healing work isn't confined to bodywork, I imagine that it will remain an important part of what I do for years and likely decades to come.

8
How often do you travel? Do you prefer to travel or are you more of a homebody?

- I travel quite a bit and love to do so for work. While in NYC, I work mostly from my home, though I will make outcalls in the NYC area for an additional fee. Otherwise, I love to travel all over the world, and get on planes as often as possible.

9
What distinguishes you from all the other Masseurs?

- While I work, I also tune into my client's energetic body and give a reading. Everyone's body has a story to tell, and I "read" your body's story to provide you with a more comprehensive, mind/body/spirit session vs something that is purely physical.

10
How would you like someone that contacts you for a massage to feel when they leave?

- It's important to me that my clients leave my space feeling lighter than when they came in. I remind my clients as we begin their session that it is THEIR TIME to relax, rejuvenate, and heal. It is their time to let go and allow someone else to take care and nurture. As a result of that time spent together, my goal is that my client gets up off of my table feeling like a noodle, and floats out of my door to go about his day in blissful well-being.

11
Tell us a little about yourself, if you were to pick something what would you like your clients to absolutely know about you?

- I feel it's most important that my clients understand that I am a bonafide healer. I get that there are plenty of beautiful men on this website, with perfect physiques, holding space for all sorts of work. MY work is truly about healing, and it's important for my clients to know that THAT is entirely up to them, how far they want to take their own healing and personal wellness.

What does this mean? Anyone who is suffering from any physical, emotional, spiritual malady can come and see me and experience profound healing and positive, progressive change. I look forward to working with you!

12
Do you consider yourself a successful Masseur?

- I measure my success by the outcomes of my clients, largely. I take my work very seriously and want to provide positive outcomes and ultimately hold healing space for these positive outcomes to occur. I understand that, as a healer, I am only responsible for my intention and efforts made, and that beyond that it is up to each individual to allow for and ultimately affect one's one healing.

13
Do you remember your first client ? Tell us something about that first day when you decided to be a Masseur!

- I do remember my first client! I went to his place in the West Village. I lugged my clunky, heavy (well, heavy in this case) massage table to his place and gave my first 90min deep tissue session. I still work with him today.

In one of our last sessions, I noticed Pete (given a fake name here) just didn't look himself. I asked him if all was well, to which he replied, "I've just been fighting this cold off for a few days." Normally, I don't work with people if they are sick because it can widen their situation. Since he was already at my place and about to be on my table, I figured it must have been meant to be this way, that I will really encourage lots of hydration and not go as deeply as I normally would. I discovered a hard nodule almost hidden under his collar bone. I asked him about it, and he was unaware it was there.

He ended up going to get the lump biopsied, and days after was rushed to the hospital because he wasn't making sense. It turns out, Pete had stage IV lymphoma that, had that spot not been discovered and biopsied, it might have taken physicians too long to figure out what was happening.

Pete is in full remission today and still my client! I love what I do!
