- Extensive training? No, certainly not, but you definitely need a structural understanding of the body and a technical understanding of massage technique. Those aren't (by my standards) extensive, quite the opposite, I consider them the bare minimum.

I think the rest is developing your own technique, the order you do things, a caring approach, providing and maintaining open communication with the person being massaged, but all of that comes with experience.
