himborubs's Personal Masseur InterviewLast Updated: Apr 22, 19:17
- I've met some spectacular masseurs in this SF. I think the thing that distinguishes me, is a general awareness/intention behind everything I do. When someone arrives for a massage, I want the music correct, the lighting relaxing, the temperature of the room perfect, some relaxing visuals or ambient, relaxing kinetic energy in the room, etc. I've also found that I like to start each session with something easy and light hearted, even if its just a short conversation, before I lead you onto the table. Establishing what our energies are with each other makes the whole experience so much more pleasurable, and I wish that was something more masseurs did. Sometimes the whole experience can feel a bit cold and impersonal if those first moments aren't handled with intention.
- I would say you have to love it. You have to be self driven. And like most things, if you want that drive to be sustainable, you have to genuinely find joy in it. Thats one of the reasons Ive been able to find success with it, is that I genuinely enjoy it, and enjoy people.
- I'm a professional video editor, graphic designer, and artist. So when i'm not working on a freelance project, I generally keep my own life very artistic as well. Embroidery, wiresculpture, LED neon sculpture, interior design, hosting friends for movie nights, video games, playing guitar, piano, autoharp, or accordion.
- I always like my massages to feel like a gift. Something that has a lot of time and intention spent considering how its packaged, how its put together, and ideally tailored to what the person wants. I want the client to feel the gratitude I have for them visiting, as well as hopefully a significant amount of physical release that carries them through the next few days. Massage can be one of those things you get a "high" from, and I hope that would stick with them.
- If I had to narrow it down, I would say that the thing I'd most want clients to know about me, is that I'm very, very easygoing. I love conversation, I love connection, I love the intricacies of getting to know someone, or just getting to listen to them. One of my favorite books is Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin, and living in SF, it feels very real to just listen to people from all walks of life tell me a bit about themselves while they're on my table. Its also a really special and unique dynamic to have someone just far enough removed, and discrete enough, that sometimes it can be very emotionally therapeutic to talk through some aspects of their life without it feeling invasive or too vulnerable.
- Yes! It feels kind of funny to say that, as I genuinely dont like to brag/gloat, but I am genuinely proud of the career that I've built giving very regular massages with repeat clients.
- Oh, absolutely. I genuinely crave the connection that comes with massage. Its definitely a little scary or intimidating at first, especially for people who have never had a massage before. But once youre there, and connected with that person, its like some kind of magic. Id absolutely miss it if I couldn't do it anymore.
- Yes! Growing up I was surrounded by wonderful folks in the energy work field, and in addition, my mother was a birth doula. So from a young age I feel like I was always learning about how to support one another by comforting eachothers physical bodies. Seeing some of the transformative work that people around me were doing, was really inspiring to my decision to pursue massage.
