AllAmericanKid's Massage Interview
Do you remember your first client ? Tell us something about that first day when you decided to be a Masseur!
My first client was at massage school. It was an elderly woman who had been coming into the school for some time. I got her on my table and she asked for deep tissue. I started doing the massage and she kept telling me to go deeper. At one point, I was putting the bulk of my weight into the massage. She started to moan, louder and louder. I was very embarrassed. My instructor brought me outside and asked me if we were having *** in the room. I had to tell him that she was really into the massage because of the pressure and she really loved it. She told me that she would be back next week and specifically ask for me...she came back every week until we graduated from school and always asked for me.
Do you consider yourself a successful Masseur?
Yes, because I have had people constantly tell me how wonderful my hands are and how much better they have felt after I have touched them.
Tell us a little about yourself, if you were to pick something what would you like your clients to absolutely know about you?
I am a people person and love life. I love talking to people but the best part about me is that I am a great listener. I know when to shut my mouth and open my ears and allow the heart of that person to open up.
How would you like someone that contacts you for a massage to feel when they leave?
When they leave me, I want to feel drained. I want their bodies to feel so great from their massage that they want and need to go home and take a nap. I want them to feel as if they have been rejuvenated and can't wait until they can book with me again.
What are your hobbies, what do you like to do in your spare time?
I am a comic book nerd. Superman, Spiderman and the Xmen are my favorite characters. Also, I like to collect items from yesteryear. I have a wide array of old 8mm movie projectors. A jukebox with all of the original 45s still in it.
Why did you become a Masseur?
I have always felt that my life's work was to help others. Massage allows me to fulfill that and also to meet new people and make new life friends.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to be a Masseur?
Do it not for the money, but because you love people and life.
What distinguishes you from all the other Masseurs?
My very large hands. My ability to feel empathy for others and I am one massage therapist who loves to give feet massages. I know what it feels like to have a great foot massage and I want everyone to experience that feeling.
How long have you been a Masseur and how long do think you'd like to continue?
I've been massaging people since my military days but didn't take it seriously until after I retired and went to school and love the many modalities.
How often do you travel? Do you prefer to travel or are you more of a homebody?
Being a career military man, I have traveled around the world. There are still places I want to see, even here in America and look forward to doing much more traveling in the future.
Is extensive training necessary for a Masseur in order to be successful?
I don't know about extensive training but I do think that some training is required. Since I graduated from school, I have gone to other massage therapist and a lot of them have the book knowledge but not the practical knowledge. That comes with time and experience and dealing with people and understanding their needs. It comes with being able to make someone feel relaxed enough that when they get on your table, they relinquish any and all anxieties.
How do you like clients to feel about the experience when they leave?
I want them to ask me when they can book another session.
I want them to feel spent but relaxed.
Some people say that being a Masseur is addictive. Would you miss your Masseur days ?
I would. I would miss the personal interaction that you form with others.
