BreathWorkSeth's Personal Masseur Interview
Last Updated: Feb 20, 2024

1
How do you like clients to feel about the experience when they leave?

- changed.

I want them to be conscious and cognizant of the differences in their self and spirit after working together.

Whether it be body blockages or knots in their knowledge ... wait ... strike that. Reverse it.

I like to know that the clients like what they feel and that's all that matters.

2
Why did you become a Masseur?

- I'm a people pleaser at heart.

I used to be able to "feel" places to work on someone and more often than not I started being asked for actual sessions/time rather than quick rubs.

Investigated certification/training and have enjoyed it more as a hobby than anything since!

3
What advice would you give to someone who wants to be a Masseur?

- do yoga and don't crack your knuckles/wrist 🙈

I'm sure I have more but that's enough for now

4
Do you consider yourself a successful Masseur?

- Being from LA, the obvious answer to this question is akin to when actors are asked if THEY are successful. Are they a WORKING actor?

If I'm getting called back by clients and getting good feedback while I'm working, that's as much success as I need.

5
Is extensive training necessary for a Masseur in order to be successful?

- Is it nurture or is it nature?
Extensive or otherwise, chicken or the egg?

Are all good masseurs trained? No
Are all trained masseurs good? No
Is being trained a good thing? Absolutely

Can you be a masseur without training? Yes
Can you be a good masseur without training? Yes
Is it better to be trained? Y E S

FULL STOP, being trained is about SAFETY not just for the client but you as well.

Nobody WANTS to injure anyone. Without the basic levels of kinesiology and body dynamics, the risk of doing so is exponential. That said, doesn't mean it's impossible to hurt someone (or even yourself) without base knowledge of what you are doing.

Training gives a basic structure of the practice AND in my opinion, all the training in the world won't help you give a good massage.

The most important part is intuitively connecting with the client to know what needs to be worked on and how.

More than ⅔ of my sessions working on someone is in "response" to their body talking to me via a twitch or cramp working at the other end of their body.

Training will teach you what you're working on and how but not necessarily why and when.

6
How long have you been a Masseur and how long do think you'd like to continue?

- I've been giving massages since my high-school swim team. I know this because I have vivid memories of having lines of people between their races that wanted me to work on them ... until a girl I was working on missed her race and our coach told me that wouldn't be happening anymore.

With a passion for the connection, touch, and satisfying feeling when a knot releases in my hands and fingers ... not sure I'd ever stop.

The feeling of healing is pure magic.

How can one imagine their life without something that GIVES them life?

7
How often do you travel? Do you prefer to travel or are you more of a homebody?

- I have owned my own business in the travel industry for over a decade now. I love traveling. Annually, I'm actually OUT of my apartment more often than I'm there.

A lot of my travel involved highly dense populations either by nature of the destination or events while I was there. I love people in many ways.

Covid taught me how much I love being alone and in my own space. I'm a friggin' AMAZING homebody ... I believe we are called extroverted introverts now.

I'd just like to think it's a balance.

8
How would you like someone that contacts you for a massage to feel when they leave?

- I want them to feel like their body has evolved from a ticking clock to a smooth winding Rolex, their circulation being a constant regenerative flow rather than stiff and perfunctory.

Breathing should feel that that first inhale of cool, brisk, and fresh outdoors. Pep in their step. Clarity.

Most importantly though, I'd want them to feel a connection and trust only shared by people who have opened up their bodies to one another. Sexuality and Romanticism aside, intimacy and connection between strangers is a very powerful and distinct feeling.

Two humans healing one another.

9
What are your hobbies, what do you like to do in your spare time?

- What is spare time? 🙂

I like to work in the creative and comedic writing space in conjunction with a heavy meditation/breathwork practice. That goes hand in hand with the yoga -- all of which straddle hobby and profession depending who is with me.

Traveling is a profession as well but I am always looking for the next opportunity for personal trips being a bonus added onto a work one. That brings me to a lot of culinary delights which inspires me to play in the kitchen whenever possible.

But on the off chance I have time to myself standing still ... I could probably disappear into a vortex of Netflix Hulu Max Amazon Paramount Disney Peacock losing concept of time and space till friends and family start asking for proof of life and showing up for wellness checks.

10
Some people say that being a Masseur is addictive. Would you miss your Masseur days ?

- I've always heard and believed that travel is one of the only things that you spend money on that makes you richer.

To me, human connection is in that ethos
... especially from a service provider standpoint comparing it to "addiction" which usually infers a compulsion at a cost.

I don't intend to miss them. Love what you do and you never work a day in your life. I believe these connections and the releases that come from nurturing them are the healthiest addiction of all.

No. I take that back. Chocolate. Chocolate is the healthiest addiction there is.
